The Fence

The Fence
The Fence is the title given to the economic mastermind of the Gilded Hand, the individual responsible for transforming the guild's stolen "assets" into usable, untraceable wealth. While the title might suggest a simple back-alley dealer, The Fence of Kigum is a sophisticated financier who manages a global network of shell companies, art galleries, and merchant consortiums. They are the bridge between the criminal underworld and the legitimate economy, ensuring that the Gilded Hand's massive profits can be reinvested into political influence and advanced technology. Without The Fence, the guild would be nothing more than a collection of wealthy outlaws; with them, it is a shadow superpower.
The Fence often operates in plain sight, maintaining a public persona as a high-society art collector or a retired merchant of immense means. They are a master of "Economic Alchmey," capable of laundering unrefined Aether crystals through a dozen different jurisdictions until they appear as legitimate dividends from the Grand Arcane Bank itself. They also handle the guild's more exotic acquisitions, such as ancient draconic scrolls or forbidden research notes, finding buyers among the world's most desperate and unethical scholars. The Fence's information network is nearly as extensive as The Weaver's, focusing specifically on market fluctuations, trade embargoes, and the financial vulnerabilities of the city's elite.
Despite their refined exterior, The Fence is as ruthless as any assassin. They understand that in Kigum, gold is a more effective weapon than steel, and they have brought entire noble houses to ruin through coordinated trade wars and debt manipulation. They maintain a strictly professional relationship with the other members of the Shadow Council, viewing the guild's operations as a high-stakes business venture. The Fence's greatest challenge is the growing industrial might of Steamfort, whose standardized mechanical parts are more difficult to "launder" than the unique, magically-enchanted artifacts traditionally favored by the Kigum elite.
