The Salt-Crusted Caves

The Salt-Crusted Caves

The Salt-Crusted Caves

Overview & Aesthetic

The Salt-Crusted Caves are a series of shallow, jagged caverns located on the rocky coastline of the archipelago, just beneath the lower roots of the mangrove forest. These caves are constantly battered by the tides of the Boundary Ocean, resulting in thick, glittering deposits of white salt that cover every surface. The air inside is sharp and bracing, smelling intensely of ozone and brine.

The aesthetic is one of stark, crystalline beauty and extreme harshness. The walls of the caves are composed of razor-sharp salt-shards that catch the light of the aether-mist, creating a shimmering, almost blinding environment. The floor is littered with tide-pools filled with rare salt-resistant seaweed and small, colorful crustaceans.

History & Lore

The caves have long been used by the Mist-Whiskers as a source of high-quality sea-salt, which is a vital preservative for their fish-stocks. They are also considered a place of "Exile" in Muridae culture; those who have committed serious crimes are often sent here to "Reflect" in the harsh conditions. It is believed that the salt has a purifying effect on the soul, but only the strongest can survive the exposure for more than a few days.

Points of Interest

  • The Crystal Pillar: A massive column of solid salt in the center of the largest cave, which has been carved with the names of all Muridae who have died at sea.
  • The Brine-Pools: Deep natural basins where the salt concentration is so high that a creature can float effortlessly. The water is believed to have powerful healing properties for skin ailments.
  • The Salt-Altar: A small shrine dedicated to the Mist-Weaver, where sailors offer tokens of their industry in exchange for safe passage through the reefs.
  • The Grotto of Shadows: A dark, deeper section of the cave system where the salt has turned grey due to proximity to a localized aether-leak.

Local Factions & NPCs

  • The Mist-Whiskers: Frequently visit the caves to harvest salt and collect rare seaweed.
  • The Salt-Gatherers: A guild of hardy laborers who have adapted to the cave's harsh environment.
  • Scavenger Grix: Occasionally searches the tide-pools for shipwreck debris that has been washed ashore.
  • The Salt-Shamblers: Primitive constructs made of solidified brine that guard the deeper sections of the caves.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • Dehydration: Characters who spend more than 4 hours in the caves must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or suffer one level of exhaustion due to the extreme salt concentration in the air.
  • Razor-Sharp Surfaces: Moving through the caves without proper footwear is difficult terrain. Characters who fall prone in the caves take 1d6 slashing damage.
  • Blinding Reflection: In areas of bright light, the salt-walls can cause temporary blindness. Perception checks involving sight are made with disadvantage.
