The Boundary Ocean is the vast, largely unexplored body of water that marks the edge of the civilized world of Aethervale. It is a place of legend and terror, where the Aether-currents are at their most chaotic and the physical laws of the world begin to fray. The ocean is characterized by its deep, unnaturally dark water, frequent "Gravity Eddies" that can pull ships beneath the waves, and a complete lack of stable landmarks once one travels beyond the Crystal Archipelago.

The Boundary Ocean is the home of the Abyssal Fleet, the skeleton-crewed ships of Kel'Thuz the Whispering Lich that rise from the deep trenches to raid the coastal settlements. It is also rumored to hide the ruins of the "Sunken Empire," a civilization that was destroyed during the Age of Ruin. Very few sailors venture far into the Boundary Ocean and return, and those who do often tell tales of massive, tentacled leviathans and islands that disappear when you try to land on them. It is the ultimate frontier for those seeking ancient secrets or a way out of the draconic Cold War.

Plot Hooks:

  • The Sunken Ziggurat: A map is discovered that allegedly shows the location of a perfectly preserved ziggurat from the Sunken Empire. The party must charter a ship and survive the dangers of the Boundary Ocean to find it.
  • The Abyssal Siege: A coastal town is under siege by the Abyssal Fleet. The party must find a way to break the blockade and strike at the fleet's flagship, a rotting behemoth known as The Silent Widow.
  • The Edge of the World: The party is hired by a group of "Void-Gazers" to sail to the very edge of the Boundary Ocean to witness a celestial event that only happens once every five centuries.
