The Barnacle Market

The Barnacle Market
Overview & Aesthetic
The Barnacle Market is the chaotic heart of commerce in Drift-Haven, located on the broad, salt-encrusted decks of several lashed-together merchant galleons. It is the primary point of exchange between the Mist-Whiskers and the rare outsiders who manage to find their way to the root-level of The Shrouded Boughs. The market is a maze of stalls made from tattered sails, driftwood crates, and rusted iron cages.
The aesthetic is one of damp, salty industry. The air is filled with the smell of dried fish, exotic spices recovered from shipwrecks, and the ozone-scent of raw aether-crystals. The ground is often slick with seawater and crushed shells.
History & Lore
The market grew naturally as Drift-Haven expanded. Initially a simple place for sailors to trade food and tools, it has become a legendary hub for "Found Treasures." Because the Boughs act as a natural trap for the currents of the Boundary Ocean, almost anything from across Aethervale can eventually find its way to the Barnacle Market—if a Mist-Whisker scavenger is brave enough to find it first.
Points of Interest
- The Scavenger's Row: A section of the market dedicated to artifacts recovered from shipwrecks—rusty gears, navigation tools, and strange artifacts from the Argentari Empire.
- The Kelp-Kitchens: Stalls that serve "Mist-Whisker Delicacies" like salt-cured crab, steamed mangrove seeds, and potent seaweed ale.
- The Aether-Exchange: A high-security area where rare aetheric crystals and shipwrecked machinery are traded for Muridae craftsmanship.
- The Drift-Post: A central bulletin board where sailors post notices for scavenge-jobs, warnings about sea-monsters, and news from the outside world.
Local Factions & NPCs
- Captain Squeak: Often found here, negotiating for the best prices on ship parts and sharing rumors with other captains.
- Scavenger Grix: Operates a popular stall called "Grix’s Glints," specializing in pre-flood technology and strange curiosities.
- Market-Master Pip: Occasionally visits from Ardor to coordinate the "Vertical Trade" between the root-level and the canopy.
- The Drift-Watch: Maintain a constant presence to prevent brawls and ensure that "Foreigners" (outsiders) don't wander off into the restricted areas of the haven.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- Slippery Decks: The wet, shell-covered wood is difficult terrain. Characters who move more than half their speed must make a DC 10 Acrobatics check or fall prone.
- Pickpockets: The market is crowded and chaotic. There is a 5% chance every hour of a character having a small item stolen by a nimble young Muridae.
- Corrosive Air: The salt-heavy air can degrade non-magical metal equipment over long periods. After 24 hours in the market, metal items may suffer a permanent -1 penalty to AC or damage (can be prevented by oiling the gear).
