Steamfort Outpost 42

Steamfort Outpost 42
Overview & Aesthetic
Steamfort Outpost 42 is a gritty, utilitarian maintenance and security station located in the transition zone between the Steamfort Lower Levels and the Deep-Strands. It is a circular chamber of reinforced steel, filled with humming Aether-purifiers, massive brass valves, and heavy blast doors. The air is surprisingly clean compared to the Smog-Tiers, though it smells strongly of ozone and industrial cleanser.
History & Lore
Originally built as a primary hub for monitoring the Aether-Pipe network, the outpost was abandoned during the "Great Rupture" when the pipes began leaking unrefined magic. It was recently reclaimed by a group of independent engineers and adventurers (often the player party) who jury-rigged the systems to create a defensible safe zone. It now serves as the primary staging ground for missions into the Deep-Strands.
Points of Interest
- The Aether-Purifier: A massive, shuddering machine that filters the toxic magical residue from the air. If it fails, the outpost becomes uninhabitable within minutes.
- The Deep-Strand Hatch: A heavy, circular floor-hatch that leads directly into the subterranean cavern network. It is equipped with a high-speed winch system.
- The War Room: A small chamber filled with maps of the pipe network and a primitive, long-range acoustic communication system.
- The Armory Cage: A reinforced mesh cage used for storing explosives and high-pressure welding equipment.
Local Factions & NPCs
- Chief Engineer Kora Flint: A brilliant but perpetually stressed dwarf who manages the outpost's systems.
- The Pipe-Walkers: A group of specialized technicians who perform high-risk repairs on the exterior lines.
- "Spark": An erratic, salvaged AI that occasionally provides useful data but is prone to temporal glitches.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- Fortified Position: The outpost is designed for defense. The blast doors have an AC of 19 and 100 hit points.
- Ozone Saturation: The high concentration of purified air grants a +2 bonus to saving throws against poison and disease while inside.
- Aether-Feedback: Using high-level magic (4th level or higher) inside the outpost has a 10% chance of overloading the purifier, causing a 20ft radius explosion of force damage.
