The Deep-Strands

The Deep-Strands

The Deep-Strands are a global labyrinth of subterranean tunnels that span the entirety of Aethervale, far beneath the feet of those who walk the surface. Unlike the chaotic, jagged caves of the natural world, the Deep-Strands are a masterpiece of kobold engineering. Reinforced with Aether-glass—a translucent, incredibly durable material created by fusing sand with raw Aether at high temperatures—the tunnels hum with a faint, iridescent glow.

These strands serve as the primary transit system for the Sub-Terran Accord, connecting every major city on the surface through a series of "Vertical-Shunts." These elevators use buoyancy crystals to move goods and people from the depths to the surface in minutes. The network is not just for travel; it is a massive conduit for diverted Aether, which the kobolds use to power their sprawling underground civilization.

Travelers in the Deep-Strands must navigate a complex system of tolls, identification checks, and "Trap-Gating," where sections of the tunnel can be instantly flooded, collapsed, or filled with noxious gas at the touch of a button from a remote monitoring station.

Key Features:

  • Aether-Glass Reinforcement: The walls are smooth, glowing, and nearly indestructible.
  • The Central Hub: A massive intersection located directly beneath the Mana Wastes, where the flow of diverted Aether is most concentrated.
  • Maintenance Creeps: Small, automated constructs that patrol the lines, repairing cracks and clearing debris.
