Phord

Phord was once a thriving river-port and a vital trade hub located at the intersection of three major Aetheric ley lines. During the Arcanum Wars, its strategic importance made it a primary target for the Arcane Ascendancy, leading to the infamous "Siege of Phord" in 212 AW. The city was surrounded by a blockade of mana-forged thralls and warded against all conventional magical escape. For six months, the citizens of Phord endured a brutal campaign of attrition, with the Ascendancy's mages using the city as a testing ground for experimental reality-warping spells. The siege was only broken when the Crimson Company orchestrated a daring river assault, utilizing armored barges to smash through the magical blockade.

Today, Phord is a "Living Ruin," a place where the physical environment has been permanently scarred by the intense magical bombardment it suffered centuries ago. The river that once brought prosperity now flows with "Ghost-Water"—a shimmering, semi-transparent liquid that occasionally shows reflections of the city as it existed before the war. The streets are plagued by "Echo-Spirits," non-sentient remnants of the thousands who died during the siege, perpetually reenacting their final moments. Despite these dangers, a small, hardy population of scavengers and "Aether-Dredgers" continues to live in the outskirts, braving the anomalies to recover the valuable artifacts and refined crystals buried beneath the rubble.

Phord is currently under a strict quarantine enforced by the Arcane Guard of Kigum, though the enforcement is notoriously corrupt. The city has become a haven for those seeking to operate outside the law, including agents of the Gilded Hand and members of various forbidden cults. There are persistent rumors that the Arcane Ascendancy left behind a "Hidden Vault" deep beneath the city's central plaza, containing the research notes for their most devastating spells. This legend draws countless adventurers and power-hungry mages to Phord, most of whom are never seen again, their souls presumably becoming just another set of echoes in the city's haunted streets.
