The Crimson Company

The Crimson Company
The Crimson Company is the most feared and disciplined mercenary organization in the Broad Swells. Founded during the War of Sunder (210 AW), they are famous for their "Iron and Lead" philosophy, which prioritizes technological and tactical innovation over raw arcane power.
Commander Vane: The Eternal Tactician
The company is led by Commander Vane, an immortal human warrior who was cursed during the final siege of the War of Sunder. Legend says he was struck by a necrotic blast that should have obliterated him, but instead, it tethered his soul to the material plane with an agonizing permanence. Vane does not age, and wounds that would kill a mortal man knit closed over time, though they leave jagged, silver scars.
Vane is a cold, calculating leader who views war as a series of solvable equations. He has seen centuries of conflict and possesses a tactical library in his mind that spans the rise and fall of nations.
Specialized Tactics: The Mage-Breakers
The Crimson Company rose to prominence by solving a problem most armies couldn't: how to kill a high-level wizard without having one of your own.
- Null-Field Arrays: The Company utilizes portable "Null-Anchors"—Aether-draining pylons that create localized dead-magic zones. These are often deployed via specialized crossbow bolts or hidden by infiltrators before an engagement.
- The Lead Curtain: Vane was one of the first to recognize the potential of Steamfort's black powder technology. His "Arquebusier Squares" are trained to fire in rhythmic volleys, creating a wall of lead that is difficult to deflect with traditional magical shielding.
- Cold Iron Armaments: Every Crimson soldier carries a sidearm or blade forged from "Sunder-Iron," a specialized cold-iron alloy that disrupts channeled arcane energy upon contact.
Organization and Recruitment
The Company maintains a strict hierarchy. Only those who pass the "Trial of the Swells"—a grueling survival exercise in the Mana-affected waters—are allowed to wear the crimson cloak.
- The Iron Guard: Vane’s personal retinue, equipped with prototype Aether-dampening plate armor.
- The Flint-Lock Mariners: Expert marksmen and sailors who man the Company’s fleet.
- The Disrupters: Specialized units trained in sabotage and the deployment of anti-magic munitions.
Current Status
While nominally neutral, the Crimson Company is currently heavily invested in the "Southern Buffer" contract for Kigum, though rumors suggest Steamfort has made an offer to buy out their loyalty for a push into the Crystal Archipelago.
