The Iron Guard

The Iron Guard
The Iron Guard is the elite personal retinue of Commander Vane and the primary shock-infantry unit of the Crimson Company. Composed of the company's most decorated veterans, the Iron Guard is tasked with the protection of the "Vane's Vigil" floating fortress and the execution of the most high-risk, strategically critical operations. They are famous for their "Iron and Lead" philosophy, which prioritizes disciplined teamwork and technological superiority over raw arcane power. Unlike the rank-and-file Crimson soldiers, members of the Iron Guard are equipped with prototype Aether-dampening plate armor, forged from the same Sunder-Iron alloy used in their Commander's own weapons.
The training for the Iron Guard is legendary for its brutality, culminating in the "Trial of the Swells"—a week-long survival exercise in the most mana-affected and monster-infested waters of the Broad Swells. Those who survive are bonded together by an unbreakable sense of camaraderie and a fanatical loyalty to Commander Vane. In combat, the Iron Guard operates with a cold, machine-like efficiency, utilizing synchronized "Shield-and-Shot" tactics. They form unbreakable defensive lines with their magically-reinforced shields while simultaneously delivering devastating volleys from their Steamfort-designed repeating rifles. They are the "immovable object" that Vane uses to anchor his tactical equations.
The Iron Guard also serves as the Company's internal police force, ensuring that the strict military code of the Crimson Company is upheld at all costs. They are the ones who manage the recruitment of new "Mage-Breakers" and ensure that the company's anti-magic munitions are properly deployed. Because of their specialized equipment and their proximity to the immortal Commander, the Iron Guard are often viewed with a mixture of fear and awe by other mercenary bands. They are a physical manifestation of Vane's tactical genius—a perfectly calibrated weapon designed to survive and conquer in a world where magic and industry are in constant, violent conflict.
