Kaelen the Mirage-King

Kaelen the Mirage-King
Appearance
Kaelen is an elf of ethereal, almost unsettling beauty. His skin is a flawless, pale violet, and his eyes are completely pupil-less, glowing with a soft, shifting arcane light. He wears flowing garments spun from what appears to be solid twilight—fabrics that shimmer and change color depending on the viewing angle. He moves with a fluid, hypnotic grace, leaving a faint afterimage whenever he steps. A crown of floating, crystalline shards orbits his head.
Personality
Arrogant, theatrical, and utterly convinced of his own godhood. Kaelen views reality as a flawed, ugly canvas that only he has the power to fix. He is intensely charismatic and deeply manipulative, speaking in poetic riddles and grandiose declarations. He does not view those he mind-controls as victims, but as "honored participants in his masterpiece." He is easily enraged by any disruption to his aesthetic vision or anyone pointing out the flaws in his illusions.
Secret Motives
Kaelen was once a Void-Gazer who stared too deeply into the raw chaos of the Mana Wastes. His mind snapped, but he gained the ability to siphon the Wastes' ambient hallucinatory energy. His goal is to expand his "Mirage-Kingdom" across all of Aethervale. He plans to erect massive crystalline amplification towers to project a global, permanent illusion, trapping the entire population in a shared, euphoric dream-state where he is the omnipotent creator, while their physical bodies slowly starve in reality.
Combat Tactics
- Master of Illusions: Kaelen never fights in a straightforward manner. The battlefield is constantly shifting. He creates illusory duplicates of himself (Mirror Image, Project Image), alters the terrain to hide traps or create fake pitfalls (Mirage Arcane), and summons illusory beasts that deal psychic damage.
- Mind Shatter: He targets characters with low Intelligence or Wisdom. His primary attack is a psychic blast that not only deals damage but forces the target to perceive their allies as horrific monsters, compelling them to attack their friends.
- Reality Warp: As a reaction to being hit, Kaelen can instantly swap places with an illusory duplicate within 60 feet, completely negating the damage of the attack.
- The Final Act: If cornered and severely wounded, Kaelen drops the beautiful illusions. The battlefield warps into a nightmarish, maddening reflection of the Mana Wastes, dealing passive psychic damage to anyone in the area and causing a severe risk of long-term madness.
