Elara "Spitfire" Vance

Elara "Spitfire" Vance is the current Commander-General of the Gear Grinders, renowned for her brilliant tactical mind and uncompromising leadership. Born into a minor noble family in Kigum, Elara rejected the expected path of magical study, finding the rigid structures of the Arcane Academy stifling. Instead, she developed a fascination with the burgeoning black-powder and steam technologies of the North. She fled her family's estate at the age of seventeen, smuggling herself aboard a merchant vessel bound for Steamfort. There, she lied about her age and background to enlist in the lower ranks of the Gear Grinders, quickly distinguishing herself through her innate understanding of ballistics and mechanized unit cohesion.

Her defining crucible occurred during the chaotic Giantfolk Incursions of 420 AW. As a mid-ranking officer, her unit was caught in an ambush by a warband of magma-infused giants. In the ensuing slaughter, a massive boulder crushed her left arm. Refusing to succumb to shock, she directed the remaining artillery fire with pinpoint accuracy, breaking the giant charge and saving her surviving troops. Following the battle, she demanded the company's engineers fashion her a replacement limb—a fully articulated, steam-powered prosthetic that doubles as a concealed firearm. This event cemented her reputation; her troops coined the moniker "Spitfire" both for her explosive temper and the literal bursts of steam venting from her new arm during combat.

As Commander-General, Elara has transformed the Gear Grinders from a band of reckless brutes into a highly disciplined, modernized military force. She instituted rigorous training regimens for the Ironclad pilots and standardized the company's equipment. While she shares her predecessor's pragmatism regarding contracts, she operates with a colder, more calculated efficiency. She despises magic, viewing the mages of her homeland as arrogant and unreliable. Under her command, the Gear Grinders have secured incredibly lucrative defense contracts, making them one of the most powerful independent factions operating outside the direct control of the major city-states.
