The Ironclad

The Ironclad
The Ironclad is the elite vanguard unit of the Gear Grinders mercenary company, composed of veteran soldiers who pilot the company's most advanced Aether-powered exosuits. These suits, often colloquially called "Clankers" due to the rhythmic thumping of their steam-pistons, are massive structures of reinforced iron and brass, bristling with heavy weaponry and defensive plating. A single Ironclad soldier is equivalent to an entire squad of conventional infantry, capable of carrying heavy artillery pieces as if they were rifles and shrugging off all but the most powerful magical attacks. They serve as the mobile "Anvil" upon which the Gear Grinders break their enemies' lines.
Recruitment for the Ironclad is incredibly selective and requires both exceptional physical strength and a high degree of technical aptitude. Pilots must undergo a series of painful "Interface Rituals"—a combination of minor surgical procedures and Aetheric attunements that allow them to control the suit's massive limbs as if they were their own. The physical and mental strain of piloting a "Clanker" is immense, often leading to a chronic condition known as "Pilot's Fatigue," where the soldier begins to feel more at home within the metal suit than in their own skin. As a result, Ironclad units are known for their intense camaraderie and their aloof, often arrogant attitude toward "soft-skin" infantry.
Tactically, the Ironclad units are used for shock-and-awe operations, deploying via specialized drop-pods from high-altitude airships or leading the charge in heavy armored columns. They specialize in breaching fortified positions, destroying enemy war machines, and providing mobile cover for the Gear Grinders' combat engineers. Each suit is highly customized by its pilot, often featuring unique insignia, trophies from defeated foes, and specialized modifications ranging from flamethrowers to experimental anti-magic fields. Under the leadership of Elara "Spitfire" Vance, the Ironclad has been modernized and disciplined, transforming from a collection of reckless brawlers into a precision tool of mechanized warfare that is feared across the continents.
