The Resin-Falls

The Resin-Falls
Overview & Aesthetic
The Resin-Falls is a visually stunning and hazardous location within the upper canopy of The Shrouded Boughs, located on the eastern side of the Mother-Tree. Here, a massive horizontal branch has developed a deep fissure, allowing the tree’s thick, amber-colored aether-sap to pour out in a slow, viscous waterfall that drops over two hundred feet before being caught by a lower branch-basin.
The sap glows with a warm, golden light, illuminating the surrounding foliage even in the thickest mist. The air is heavy with a sweet, pine-like scent that is almost intoxicating. The area is filled with the sound of the slow, rhythmic "thrum" of the falling sap hitting the resin-pool below.
History & Lore
The Falls are considered a sacred site of "Purification" by the Briar-Kin. It is believed that the sap is the pure life-blood of the Mother-Tree, and that bathing a weapon or a tool in the falls will grant it a portion of the tree’s strength. The Acorn Guard uses the resin from the base of the falls to treat their iron-wood armor, making it as hard as steel.
Points of Interest
- The Golden Basin: The large natural pool at the base of the falls where the resin collects. It is always warm and slightly buoyant.
- The Wright’s Scaffolding: A series of precarious platforms built around the falls by Master Wright Lira’s team to harvest the sap for aether-tuning.
- The Amber Caves: Small hollows behind the waterfall where the sap has hardened into translucent, golden walls, creating a natural hall of mirrors.
- The Sap-Vents: Narrow openings in the bark near the falls that emit a constant stream of warm, aromatic steam.
Local Factions & NPCs
- The Wood-Wrights: Maintain a permanent presence here to harvest and process the resin.
- Alchemist Thorne: A specialized Briar-Kin who resides in the Amber Caves, studying the medicinal and magical properties of the sap.
- The Resin-Gritters: A group of low-level workers responsible for scraping the hardened sap from the scaffolding.
- Shimmer-Beetles: Frequently found near the basin, feeding on the nutrient-rich resin.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- Sticky Terrain: Any surface within 30 feet of the falls is difficult terrain. Characters who fall prone in the resin must make a DC 14 Strength save to stand up.
- Intoxicating Scent: Characters who spend more than 1 hour near the falls must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save or be Charmed by the beauty of the forest for 1 hour.
- Sap-Burst: Every 10 minutes, a small bubble of pressurized sap can burst from the falls. One random character within 10 feet must make a DC 13 Dexterity save or be restrained by sticky resin (escape DC 14).
