The Leaf-Kite Docks

The Leaf-Kite Docks
Overview & Aesthetic
The Leaf-Kite Docks are a series of wide, flat platforms constructed from reinforced grass-matting and anchored to the sturdiest outer branches of The Crown City of Ardor. These docks serve as the primary launching and landing point for the city’s aerial transport and its elite Acorn Guard rangers. The platforms extend far out from the main tree-line to catch the strongest thermal currents rising from the Boundary Ocean.
The docks are a hive of activity, filled with the sound of wind-vanes spinning and the sharp crack of leaf-kites catching the breeze. The air here is fresh and significantly cooler than the humid depths of the root-system.
History & Lore
The docks were established during the Great Expansion, when the Briar-Kin realized that the distance between major mangrove trees was too great for simple rope-bridges. The development of the leaf-kite—a specialized glider made from the broad, buoyant leaves of the Mother-Tree—revolutionized canopy life. The docks have since become a symbol of Muridae ingenuity and their mastery over the winds.
Points of Interest
- The Launching Slopes: Steep, polished bark-ramps that allow glidists to gain enough speed for takeoff.
- The Wind-Vane Array: A series of large, colorful flags and spinning ornaments that help glidists judge the speed and direction of the currents.
- The Glider Hangar: A long, sheltered hollow where public leaf-kites are stored and maintained by specialized "Wind-Wrights."
- The Sky-Hook: A massive, crane-like device used to haul heavy cargo up from the root-level to the canopy.
Local Factions & NPCs
- The Acorn Guard: Maintain a dedicated hangar for their military gliders and use the docks as a primary training ground for new recruits.
- Flight-Leader Pippin: Frequently found here, performing daring maneuvers and testing new kite designs.
- Market-Master Pip: Oversees the commercial activity on the docks, ensuring that incoming cargo is correctly logged and taxed.
- Master Wright Bree: The most skilled kite-maker in Ardor, who can "tune" a leaf-kite to respond to the slightest change in air pressure.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- Strong Gusts: Every 30 minutes, a sudden gust of wind can force characters to make a DC 13 Strength save or be pushed 10 feet in a random direction.
- Thin Flooring: The grass-matting is strong but flexible. Characters wearing heavy armor have disadvantage on Stealth checks while on the docks.
- Launch Danger: Successfully launching a leaf-kite requires a DC 12 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. Failure results in a "stalled" launch and a potential fall.
