Crimson Pass

Crimson Pass
Crimson Pass is a narrow, wind-swept canyon that serves as the only viable overland route between the central plains and the eastern forests. Its name predates the modern era, but it was solidified in history during the final days of the War of Sunder in 225 AW. It was here that Commander Vane and the Crimson Company made their legendary "Last Stand" against the retreating remnants of the Arcane Ascendancy. The canyon's walls are permanently stained a deep, rust-red—a phenomenon many attribute to the sheer volume of blood spilled during the conflict, though geologists argue it is merely a high concentration of iron-rich Aetheric deposits.
The pass is characterized by its erratic weather and treacherous terrain. The high altitude and the convergence of several minor Aetheric currents result in constant, violent thunderstorms that can ground even the most advanced Steamfort airships. The ground is littered with the rusted remains of ancient war machines and the sun-bleached bones of both mortals and mana-thralls. Despite its grim history, the pass remains a vital artery for trade; caravans carrying Aether-crystals from the east must traverse its narrow paths, often paying heavy tithes to the Crimson Company, who still maintain a network of fortified outposts along the canyon's rim.
Crimson Pass is also the site of the "Vane Memorial," a simple obsidian pillar marking the spot where Commander Vane was allegedly struck by the necrotic curse that granted him his unwanted immortality. The area around the pillar is a "Dead-Magic Zone," where no spells can be cast and even the most powerful Aether-batteries instantly drain. This anomaly makes the pass a favored meeting ground for high-stakes diplomatic negotiations and clandestine handoffs, as it is the only place in Aethervale where a mage is as vulnerable as a common peasant. The Crimson Company treats the pass as sacred ground, and any unauthorized violence within its borders is met with immediate and overwhelming force.
