Raw Aether Crystals

Raw Aether-Crystals
Type: Resource / Fuel Origin: Steamfort (Deep Mines) / Mana Wastes
Raw Aether-Crystals are the volatile, unrefined form of magic found in deep subterranean pockets and the more chaotic parts of the world. They are jagged, opaque, and pulse with a violent, multi-colored light. Unlike refined crystals, raw Aether is highly unstable and prone to "Mana-Bleed," which can cause localized gravity failures and wild magic surges. Despite these dangers, raw crystals are the primary power source for Steamfort's mechanical marvels, as they produce significantly more heat and energy when burned in specialized engines.
Steamfort's industry is built on the mining and processing of these crystals, a dangerous job performed by the city's most hardy dwarves and automated constructs. The "Deep Mines" of Steamfort are a place of constant risk, as a single dropped crystal can cause a catastrophic explosion. Raw crystals are also highly sought after on the black market by rogue engineers and mages who are willing to risk the instability for the sake of raw power. A large deposit of raw Aether-crystals is often the cause of intense conflict between Steamfort, the Giantfolk, and the various scavenger guilds.
Plot Hooks:
- The Mine Collapse: A major Aether-crystal mine has collapsed, trapping dozens of workers and threatening to ignite a nearby gas pocket. The party must lead a rescue mission into the unstable tunnels.
- The Volatile Shipment: A group of "Scavenger Guilds" hires the party to transport a massive, raw Aether-crystal through the Mana Wastes. The crystal's instability attracts mutated beasts and wild magic storms.
- The Engine Overload: A Steamfort factory's primary engine is being fueled by a corrupted raw crystal, causing it to run at "Critical Output." The party must find a way to shut down the engine before it levels the district.
