The Vulture Syndicate

The Vulture Syndicate
The Mana Wastes are an unforgiving expanse of chaotic magic and treacherous weather, a graveyard for many a brave or foolish sky-captain. Where others see tragedy and death, the Vulture Syndicate sees opportunity. This ruthless network of scavengers, criminals, and outcasts has made a lucrative business out of picking clean the bones of downed airships and lost expeditions.
Operations and Tactics
The Vulture Syndicate does not build; it takes. They operate out of hidden, mobile camps within the Wastes, utilizing specialized, heavily armored skiffs designed to withstand localized mana storms just long enough to reach a wreck.
Their tactics are brutal and efficient:
- Storm-Riding: Expert navigators who can predict the chaotic shifts in the Wastes, allowing the Syndicate to be the first on the scene of a crash.
- Stripping: They possess specialized tools for rapidly dismantling aether engines, weapon systems, and hull plating. A crashed galleon can be reduced to a bare skeleton in a matter of hours.
- No Survivors: The Syndicate is notorious for its lack of mercy. Survivors of a crash are often viewed as liabilities or, at best, a source of ransom or slave labor.
Structure and Leadership
The Syndicate is less a unified organization and more a loose confederation of independent scavenger crews, each led by a "Carrion Lord." These lords constantly vie for territory and the most lucrative salvage claims. Disputes are often settled through bloody skirmishes or treacherous backstabbing.
The only rule that unites them is the "Code of the Scab," which dictates that whoever first places their mark on a wreck has the sole right to salvage it. Violating this code invites the wrath of the entire Syndicate.
Relations
The Vulture Syndicate is universally despised by the major factions of Aethervale. The Ironclad Vanguard and the Gilded Corsairs both shoot Syndicate vessels on sight. However, many black markets in the lower tiers of the floating cities secretly rely on the Syndicate for a steady supply of cheap, unregulated aether-tech and salvaged materials.
