The Ironclad Vanguard

The Ironclad Vanguard

The Ironclad Vanguard was a historic, joint military force established under the Treaty of the Iron Anvil in 420 AW. This unprecedented alliance brought together the disparate military philosophies of Kigum and Steamfort to repel the catastrophic Giantfolk Incursions. The Vanguard was designed to be a "perfect" army, combining the devastating arcane fire of Kigum's battle-mages with the unstoppable mechanical might of Steamfort's ironclad units and heavy artillery. For a brief, tense period, the two superpowers set aside their ideological Cold War to face an existential threat that promised to scour civilization from the northern coasts.

The tactical composition of the Vanguard was a marvel of forced cooperation. Steamfort provided massive, Aether-powered transport crawlers and mobile shield-generators that protected Kigum's glass-cannon casters from physical projectiles. In return, Kigum's mages wove intricate, cooling wards around Steamfort's overheating engines and provided magical flight for heavy ironclad suits. The most famous engagement was the Battle of the Boiling Coast, where the Vanguard held a narrow mountain pass against a literal tide of magma-infused giants. The synergy was so effective that the giant warbands, which had previously decimated individual city-state armies, were routed within weeks.

Despite its success, the Ironclad Vanguard was never intended to last. The dual command structure was plagued by mutual suspicion, with officers from both sides constantly monitoring their counterparts for signs of betrayal or intellectual property theft. As soon as the Giantfolk threat retreated into the volcanic wastes, the Treaty of the Iron Anvil expired, and the Vanguard was formally disbanded. The veterans of this unit, however, often remember their time in the Vanguard with a strange nostalgia, having witnessed firsthand what the two great powers could achieve if they were ever truly united. Today, many of the tactics pioneered by the Vanguard are still studied in military academies, though they are now framed as "counters" to the very allies they once fought beside.
