The Salt Shields

The Salt Shields

The Salt Shields are a premier naval mercenary company specializing in heavy defense and maritime escort, operating out of the iron-shod floating fortress known as the Gilded Anvil. Founded by Captain "Iron-Side" Groggan following his disillusioned departure from the Steamfort Navy, the company has built an iron-clad reputation for being the most reliable protectors in the Broad Swells. Their philosophy is simple: the cargo arrives, or no one gets paid. This uncompromising adherence to their defensive contracts has made them the favorite choice for wealthy merchant consortiums and the Grand Arcane Bank when transporting high-value Aether-crystals through pirate-infested waters.

The Salt Shields' military doctrine revolves around the "Turtle-Shell" formation, utilizing a fleet of unique, heavily armored vessels. These ships, often constructed from Aether-treated oak and reinforced with thick plates of Steamfort steel, are designed to absorb immense amounts of damage while maintaining a steady, defensive position. The company's mariners, mostly dwarves and hardened human sailors, are trained in "Station-Holding"—the art of maintaining a perfect perimeter even under heavy magical bombardment or the assault of deep-sea leviathans. They utilize magically-reinforced shields and heavy, short-range ballistae to repel boarders and sink smaller, faster vessels that attempt to breach their lines.

Despite their defensive nature, the Salt Shields are far from passive. They maintain a fierce professional rivalry with the Crimson Company, often clashing when their respective employers' interests misalign in the lawless sea. While the Crimson Company is known for its aggressive, preemptive strikes, the Salt Shields pride themselves on being the immovable object that no force can overcome. They are currently the primary stabilizing force in the southern trade routes, their presence often being enough to deter all but the most desperate pirate raids. To the sailors of the Broad Swells, the sight of a Salt Shield banner—a silver anvil on a blue field—is a rare promise of safety in a world of constant peril.
