The Crystal Weeping Cathedral

The Crystal Weeping Cathedral
Location: Dal Dur (Deepest Reaches) Level Range: 8-9
Background & Objective
Far below the active mines, a natural geode formation resembling a cathedral has been discovered. The "veins" of this structure are made of raw Aether-crystals that literally "weep" liquid magic. The sheer density of Aether is mutating local wildlife, and the party must enter the cathedral to neutralize the source before it corrupts the upper levels.
The Gimmick: Aether-Leeching
The weeping crystals create an environment of extreme magical density. Any spell cast near these veins is "Empowered" (dealing maximum damage or effect) but simultaneously deals 2d10 necrotic damage to the caster as the crystals aggressively draw from their life force.
Tactical Combat & Challenges
- The Crystal Warden: A massive Stone Golem imbued with Aether that heals whenever a spell is cast in the room.
- Resource Management: Players must weigh the benefit of maximized spells against the severe necrotic backlash and the healing it provides their enemy. Physical attacks and non-magical tactics are crucial.
Narrative Outcomes & Loot
- Success: The Warden is defeated, and the weeping crystals are stabilized, preventing further corruption.
- Huge Throbbing Treasure: The Heart of the Cathedral. A massive, pulsating emerald (actually a Heart of the World-Tree seedling). It can heal any disease or curse. Worth 10,000 GP to the right buyer.
