Labor Strike In The Deep Mines

Labor Strike In The Deep Mines

level_range: "1-5"

The Soot-Choked Uprising

Background & Objective

The Deep Mines of Steamfort are the city's lifeblood, but Mine 7—the "Motherlode"—has become a powder keg. Ravaged by "Iron Lung" and pushed beyond their limits, the miners have barricaded themselves in the lowest shafts. Led by the dying veteran Thrain "Copper-Cough" Ironfoot, they threaten to collapse the ventilation shafts—suffocating the upper city—unless their demands for medical care and fair pay are met. The party must descend into the soot-filled depths to resolve the standoff.

Key NPCs & Motivations

  • Thrain "Copper-Cough" Ironfoot: A man with nothing left to lose. He wants dignity for his workers and medical treatment for the sick, but his desperation makes him dangerous.
  • Overseer Bram Stonefist: The cold, profit-driven master of Mine 7. He wants the strike ended "quietly" to protect the Syndicate's reputation, even if it means "cleansing" the mines with toxic gas.

The Setting: Mine 7 (The Motherlode)

  • The Barricaded Tunnels: A maze of soot-choked corridors filled with makeshift traps, automated security turrets, and desperate miners.
  • The Dark Aether Vein: A hidden, lowest level where a corrupted, pulsing purple Aether-vein has been illegally harvested, causing reality to flicker.
  • The Ventilation Hub: A massive mechanical heart of the mine that keeps the air breathable for the upper city, currently rigged with experimental steam-drills for a controlled collapse.

Encounters & Branching Paths

  • The Iron Lung Infiltration (Stealth): Navigating the tunnels without alerting the miners' lookouts or being choked by the thick Aether-dust.
  • The Syndicate's Secret (Exploration): Discovering the illegal Dark Aether vein and deciding whether to use it as leverage or destroy it.
  • The Negotiator’s Gambit (Social): Confronting Thrain at the Ventilation Hub. Can the party convince him to trust them, or will he trigger the collapse?
  • The Cleansing Squad (Combat): If the party takes too long, Stonefist sends in "Steam-Troopers" to flood the mines with gas. The party must choose a side in the ensuing bloodbath.

Narrative Outcomes & Loot

  • Success (Peace): The miners receive their care, and the party earns the "Miner's Gratitude." Steamfort is stable but the Syndicate is wary of the party.
  • Success (Syndicate): The strike is crushed. The party is rewarded with gold and high-quality gear, but their reputation among the common folk is ruined.
  • Loot: Aether-Glass Respirator (grants immunity to inhaled poisons), Stonefist’s Signet Ring (grants discount at Syndicate shops), and a Corrupted Aether Shard (a dangerous crafting component).
