Saint Aethelgard

Saint Aethelgard the Wise
Saint Aethelgard the Wise, known as the Arcanist, is the patron saint of mages, scholars, and the pursuit of arcane knowledge. In the mythology of the Seven Saints, Aethelgard was the preeminent scholar of the Dawning Age and the supposed founder of the Grand Arcane Bank in Kigum. She is credited with the "Aetheric Synthesis"—the discovery of the methods used to safely refine and stabilize raw Aether-crystals for civilian use. Her teachings focus on the belief that magic is a fundamental law of the universe that can be mastered through rigorous study, logic, and self-discipline. She is traditionally depicted as an elderly woman with robes made of flowing starlight, holding a glowing, faceted Aether-crystal in one hand and a heavy, iron-bound tome in the other.
The most famous achievement attributed to Saint Aethelgard is the creation of "The Grand Spire," the massive arcane university and research hub that serves as the heart of Kigum. The legends claim that Aethelgard designed the Spire's intricate warding system, which allows mages to perform high-level research without the risk of mana-storms or reality-instability. She is also said to have authored the "Master Lexicon," a comprehensive dictionary of the Draconic and Celestial languages used in high-level spellcasting. She eventually transcended her mortal form, becoming one with the Aetheric Currents she studied, though her "Echo" is said to still wander the libraries of the Grand Spire, guiding those who seek knowledge with a pure heart.
In Kigum, the worship of Saint Aethelgard is synonymous with the pursuit of higher education and financial prosperity. Her image is found in every classroom, laboratory, and bank vault, and her symbol—the faceted crystal—is the official seal of the city-state. Mages pray to Aethelgard for clarity and precision during complex rituals, while scholars offer her "Ink-Tithes" to ensure the success of their research. The Order of the Facet, an elite group of mage-scholars, continues her work in refining Aetheric technology and protecting the world from forbidden, "unstable" magic. For the people of the East, Aethelgard is a symbol of their intellectual and economic dominance, the architect of a world where magic is not a wild force of destruction, but a tool for progress.
