Ignis-Kaan the Cinder King

Identity: Ancient Red Dragon, Secret Master of the North-East Location: Beneath Mount Ignis (Lifeless Swells)

Ignis-Kaan is the embodiment of destruction and raw, elemental fury. As an ancient red dragon of the First Brood, he was once a literal god-king who ruled over the volcanic regions of the North-East. After the Sundering, he followed the example of his kin and went into hiding, but unlike Aurelius or Xylira, he never lost his desire for open conquest. He slumbers deep within the magma chambers of Mount Ignis, his breath fueling the region's constant volcanic activity.

Ignis-Kaan manipulates the Giantfolk tribes of the Lifeless Swells through fiery omens and prophetic dreams, driving them into a state of perpetual aggression. He is the secret patron of the Obsidian Scale, using the cult to destabilize the "lesser" nations of Kigum and Steamfort. He seeks to ignite a global war that will consume the world's resources, allowing him to emerge from the ashes as the undisputed master of Aethervale. He is a creature of immense pride and ancient malice, viewing all other life as mere fuel for his eventual ascension.

Plot Hooks:

  • The Cinder King's Omen: A massive, draconic shadow is seen in the clouds above Steamfort, accompanied by a rain of hot ash. The party must investigate a nearby fire-giant camp to see if Ignis-Kaan is preparing to wake.
  • The Crown Shard: The party learns that Ignis-Kaan possesses one of the three shards of the Crown of Cinders. They must plan a daring heist to enter his lair while he is in a deep, magical slumber to steal the shard.
  • The Herald of Ash: A powerful fire elemental, claiming to be the "Voice of Ignis-Kaan," appears in a major city and demands the immediate surrender of its leaders. The party must defeat the herald and find out where it was summoned from.
