Root-Crab

The Root-Crab is a massive, heavily armored crustacean that inhabits the submerged sections of the mangrove roots in The Shrouded Boughs. These crabs are perfectly adapted to their environment, their shells covered in a layer of tough, bark-like growths and barnacles that make them nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding wood when they are stationary.

Root-Crabs are opportunistic scavengers, feeding on fish, seaweed, and anything else that falls from the canopy or drifts into the roots. While they are generally not aggressive toward Muridae, they are fiercely territorial and will attack anything that threatens their nesting grounds. Their pincers are strong enough to crush the hull of a small driftwood skiff.

Secret Motivation: Root-Crabs are known to collect shiny objects—coins, jewelry, and metal scrap—which they use to decorate their burrows. Experienced Mist-Whisker scavengers often look for root-crab nests as a sign of a nearby shipwreck.

Adventure Hook: A giant Root-Crab has taken up residence beneath the main pier of Drift-Haven, preventing ships from docking. Captain Squeak hires the party to relocate the creature to a distant grotto without killing it, as the crab is a mother guarding a large cluster of eggs.
