The Aetheric Soul

The Aetheric Soul: The Spark and the Cycle
In Aethervale, the soul is not a philosophical abstraction but a quantifiable concentration of high-frequency Aether. It is commonly referred to as the Aetheric Spark.
The Anatomy of the Spark
The Spark consists of three distinct layers:
- The Core (The Ichor): The immutable essence of the individual. It carries the "Weight" of the soul—the sum of its experiences across all incarnations.
- The Mantle (The Ego): The current personality, memories, and form. This layer is the most fragile and is often fragmented during the transition to the afterlife.
- The Halo (The Resonance): The aura of energy that leaks from the soul, interacting with the world. This is what mages sense when they "Detect Life."
The Cycle of the Current
When a mortal dies, the Spark is released into the Aetheric Currents.
- The Ascent: Most souls drift toward the "Upper Aether," drawn by the gravity of the Seven Saints' domains. Here, the Mantle is gently dissolved, and the Core is "recharged" before being cast back into the world in a new body.
- The Drift: Some souls, burdened by regret or dark magic, fail to ascend. They become "Aetheric Remnants" or ghosts, trapped in the "Shallows" of the world.
The Resonance Phenomenon
A soul's "Resonance" determines its affinity for magic.
- High Resonance: These individuals are natural-born sorcerers. Their souls "vibrate" in harmony with the Aether Currents.
- Discordant Resonance: These are the "Aether-Blind." Their souls are dense and resistant to magical flow. While they cannot cast spells, they are often naturally resistant to hostile magic.
The Aetheric Debt
Every time a soul is reincarnated, it leaves a tiny "residue" in the Aetheric Sea. Over eons, this residue has built up, leading some scholars to fear the Saturation Point—a moment when the Aether can no longer support new life, and the cycle will simply stop. This theory is considered a major heresy by the Church of the Seven Saints.
