The Sunken Undermart

The Sunken Undermart

The Sunken Undermart

Overview & Aesthetic

The Sunken Undermart is a surreal and vibrant black-market hub located within the massive, watertight hull of a crashed ancient airship on a shallow reef. The airship, a behemoth of brass and timber, has been converted into a multi-level city accessible via submarine or diving bells. The interior is a riot of color—neon Aether-signs, draped silks, and glowing coral. The air is humid, smelling of saltwater, incense, and expensive illegal goods.

History & Lore

The airship, the SS Gilded Whale, crashed centuries ago during a massive Aether-storm. Instead of sinking completely, it became lodged in a reef, creating a perfect, watertight space. It was eventually claimed by a group of entrepreneurial smugglers who turned it into the premier black market of the Crystal Archipelago. The Undermart operates on a simple principle: "If you have the coin, we have the item. No questions asked."

Points of Interest

  • The Captain's Casino: A high-stakes gambling hall located in the airship's former bridge.
  • The Reef-Market: A series of shops built on the exterior of the hull, protected by large glass domes.
  • The Submersible Dock: A busy harbor where dozens of small transport vessels arrive and depart every hour.
  • The Gilded Whale Tavern: The central meeting place and base of operations for adventurers in the Undermart.

Local Factions & NPCs

  • The Undermart Council: A group of three powerful smugglers who manage the city's security and trade.
  • The Reef-Divers: A group of specialized scavengers who recover artifacts from the surrounding ocean floor.
  • Madame Vespera: Who maintains a permanent "consultancy" office in the Undermart.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • Localized Flooding: Occasionally, a minor leak can occur, creating areas of difficult terrain and rising water levels during combat.
  • Watertight Integrity: Using heavy explosives or large-scale fire magic is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate intervention by the Undermart's security.
  • Pressure Changes: Entering or leaving the Undermart without a proper airlock system requires a DC 13 Constitution save or the character suffers from "The Bends" (1 level of exhaustion).
