The Sludge Wards

The Sludge Wards
Overview & Aesthetic
The Sludge Wards are the most neglected and dangerous residential sectors of the Kigum Undercity. Located directly beneath the primary outflow vents of the Upper Spire, the area is constantly "rained" upon by a mixture of grey industrial runoff and neon-green, volatile Aether-sludge. The ground is a swampy mess of mud and chemical residue, and the buildings are mostly makeshift shacks built on stilts. The air is thick with a sickly-sweet chemical smell and a constant, low-frequency magical hum.
History & Lore
Originally designed as a low-priority maintenance district, the Sludge Wards were quickly abandoned by the city's official services as the "Aether-Pipe Leak" worsened. The Arcane Ascendancy's bureaucracy intentionally vents toxic magic downward to keep the Upper Spire pure, effectively turning this district into a magical waste dump. Despite this, thousands of "Mana-Blighted" refugees and outcasts call this place home, surviving through grit and black-market scavenging.
Points of Interest
- The Rupture Pipe: A massive, glowing fracture in the main Aether-conduit that sprays raw magic into the streets. It is considered a holy site by some and a death trap by others.
- The Stilts-Market: A series of wooden platforms connected by rope bridges where residents trade salvaged scrap and "clean" water.
- The Purifier's Grave: A large, rusted machine that was supposed to clean the area's air but now serves as a hollowed-out fortress for the local gang.
- The Moss-Caves: Subterranean grottos where a rare, edible but mildly hallucinogenic moss grows, providing the district's primary food source.
Local Factions & NPCs
- The Void Gazers: A doomsday cult that worships the entropic magic of the leak and believes the "Emerald Rot" is a divine evolution.
- The Sub-Terran Accord: A group of kobolds and deep-dwellers who try to protect the local environment from further degradation.
- "Mama" Gristle: A mutation-scarred half-orc who runs the district's only reliable (and expensive) water filtration station.
Environmental Hazards / Mechanics
- Acid Sludge: Stepping into the sludge pools deals 1d6 acid damage and 1d6 force damage per round.
- Mana-Blight: Creatures starting their turn in the wards must make a DC 10 Constitution save or take 1 necrotic damage as the raw magic leaches their life force.
- Unstable Architecture: Any explosion or heavy impact has a 20% chance of causing a nearby "stilt-house" to collapse into the mud.
