The Great Anvil

The Great Anvil

The Great Anvil

Overview & Aesthetic

The Great Anvil is the spiritual and physical heart of Dal-Dur. It is a massive, flat-topped monolith of silver-flecked obsidian, over fifty feet wide, situated in a cavernous hall illuminated by the orange glow of the Magma Falls. The air is intensely hot and vibrates with the rhythmic, thunderous strikes of the Master Smith's hammers. The sound of chanting and the hiss of steam are omnipresent, creating an atmosphere of divine industry.

History & Lore

Legends say the Great Anvil was forged by the first Dwarven King from a fallen star. It is not merely a tool for smithing; it is a focus for the mountain's natural Aether-currents. Every king of Dal-Dur has been crowned atop the Anvil, and the city's most powerful artifacts—the "Shields of the First King"—were forged here. To strike the Anvil without ritual permission is considered the highest form of heresy.

Points of Interest

  • The Master Forge: A series of secondary anvils and quenching pools surrounding the Great Anvil, where the city's elite smiths work.
  • The King's Seat: A throne carved directly into the cavern wall overlooking the Anvil.
  • The Echo-Chambers: Small, high-ceilinged rooms designed to amplify the sound of the Anvil's strikes, used for musical and magical rituals.
  • The Crystal Quench: A pool of liquid Aether used for the final hardening of the most powerful weapons.

Local Factions & NPCs

  • The Master Smith Thrain: An ancient dwarf whose skin has turned the color of iron from centuries of work at the forge.
  • The Shield Bearers: The elite guard who protect the Anvil and the King.
  • The Stone-Whisperers: A group of geomancers who study the vibrations of the Anvil to predict the mountain's movements.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • Intense Heat: Characters without fire resistance must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution save every 10 minutes or gain one level of exhaustion.
  • Deafening Noise: All sound-based Perception checks have disadvantage. Verbal communication requires shouting.
  • Magical Resonance: The Anvil acts as a Pearl of Power for any dwarf or earth-elemental creature within 60 feet.
