The Clockwork Heart

The Clockwork Heart
The Clockwork Heart is the epicenter of the Chronos-Clock complex. It is a chamber of impossible proportions, carved into a pocket of the world's mantle where the laws of physics are secondary to the laws of mechanics. The air here hums with a low-frequency vibration that can be felt in the marrow of one's bones, and the scent of ozone and warm brass is omnipresent.
The Grand Regulators
Dominating the center of the chamber are the three Grand Regulators: massive, vertically-aligned gears, each the size of a city block. These gears rotate at different speeds, representing the flow of Primal, Celestial, and Abyssal Aether. They are interlaced with "Aether-Spills"—shimmering curtains of liquid mana that serve to lubricate the teeth of the gears and prevent friction-induced magical meltdowns.
The Pendulum of Ages
Suspended from the invisible ceiling by a cable of woven mithril is the Pendulum of Ages. It swings in a slow, hypnotic arc across the entire width of the chamber. At the base of its arc, it passes through the "Ignition Spark," a point of infinite magical density that "restarts" the Aether current with every pass. The wind generated by the pendulum's movement is enough to knock an unprepared traveler off the narrow maintenance walkways.
Maintenance Walkways and Piston-Lifts
The walls of the chamber are a chaotic network of brass walkways, hanging platforms, and rapidly moving piston-lifts. The Gear-Bound navigate this maze with terrifying speed, jumping between moving gears and sliding down lubricant-slicked chutes to reach points of maintenance. For anyone else, the environment is a lethal obstacle course of crushing weights, shearing forces, and unpredictable gravity pockets.
The Silence of the Stop
The most terrifying aspect of the Clockwork Heart is not its noise, but the possibility of its silence. If the rhythmic grinding ever slows, the temperature in the chamber drops precipitously, and the vibrant blue Aether begins to turn a dull, brittle gray. This "Arcane Frost" begins at the teeth of the gears and spreads outward, threatening to lock the entire mechanism in a permanent, frozen state.
