Fortune's Lake

Fortune's Lake

Fortune's Lake

Overview & Aesthetic

Fortune's Lake is a lawless, bustling frontier town located on the edge of the Shattered Plains. It is built around a large, shimmering lake that is surprisingly deep and clear, providing the region's only reliable source of water. The town is a chaotic mix of architecture—fortified merchant caravans, half-buried stone houses, and buildings made from the ribs of desert titans. The air is hot, dry, and smells of woodsmoke, roasted meat, and unwashed desert travelers.

History & Lore

The lake was discovered by a lucky prospector (hence the name) who was looking for Aether-crystals in the plains. It quickly became the primary staging ground for any expedition into the Shattered Plains or the Mana Wastes. Fortune's Lake has no official government; it is ruled by whoever has the most coin and the most hired swords. It is a place where a person can find anything—for a price—and where questions about one's past are never asked.

Points of Interest

  • The Gilded Caravan: A massive, triple-decker merchant wagon that serves as the town's primary tavern and information hub.
  • The Water-Docks: The most heavily guarded part of town, where water is pumped, filtered, and sold.
  • The Scavenger's Market: A chaotic bazaar where artifacts from the Shattered Plains are traded for food and fuel.
  • The Mercenary Guild-Hall: A fortified building where one can hire guards, scouts, and assassins.

Local Factions & NPCs

  • The Water-Lords: A group of ruthless merchants who control the town's water supply.
  • The Glass-Walkers: A nomadic group of desert scouts who specialize in navigating the Shattered Plains.

Environmental Hazards / Mechanics

  • Heat Waves: During the day, characters must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution save every hour or suffer from heat exhaustion.
  • Sandstorms: Occasionally, a sandstorm from the Shattered Plains will hit the town, reducing visibility to zero and dealing 1d4 slashing damage per round to anyone outside.
  • Water Scarcity: Water costs 1gp per gallon. Running out of water causes immediate exhaustion.
