Aether Meters

Aether-Meters
Type: Utility Item Origin: Kigum Magical Academy / Steamfort (Standard Issue)
Aether-Meters are the most common magical tools in Aethervale, used by mages, engineers, and scavengers alike to measure the density and stability of the local Aetheric field. They vary in design from delicate, glass-encased needles used in Kigum's laboratories to rugged, brass-bound dials favored by Steamfort's miners. The device works by monitoring the resonance of a small, suspended Aether-crystal; the faster the crystal pulses, the higher the local Aether concentration.
An Aether-Meter is critical for survival in the Mana Wastes, as it can warn of approaching "Wild Magic Squalls" or the presence of a localized Mana-Dead zone. In Kigum, they are also used as "Tax-Meters" to ensure that citizens are not exceeding their allotted arcane usage. A specialized version, known as a "Node-Seeker," can be used to track the movement of Aether-currents and locate hidden Nodes. While generally reliable, an Aether-Meter can be "overloaded" by a sudden, massive surge of magic, potentially exploding or providing a permanent, false reading.
Plot Hooks:
- The Meter's Warning: The party's Aether-Meter begins to spin wildly, signaling a massive, approaching magical anomaly that isn't on any map. They must find shelter before the storm hits.
- The Corrupted Meter: A merchant sells the party a "high-precision" Aether-Meter that has been secretly sabotaged by the Obsidian Scale to lead them into a Mana-Dead zone.
- The Meter's Secret: A master engineer hires the party to find a legendary "Master-Meter" from the Age of Ruin, which is said to be able to measure the Aetheric pressure of the entire world at once.
