Aether Engines

Aether-Engines
Type: Machine / Power Source Origin: Steamfort (Dwarven Engineers)
Aether-Engines are the mechanical marvels that power Steamfort's industrial supremacy. Invented during the Era III "Industrial Awakening," these engines use specialized boilers to burn raw Aether-crystals, converting the resulting magical energy into high-pressure steam. This steam is then used to power everything from the city's massive mining drills and blast furnaces to its legendary fleet of ironclad airships. The sight and sound of a thumping, hissing Aether-engine is synonymous with the city of Steamfort itself.
While incredibly powerful, Aether-engines are also highly complex and dangerous. They require constant maintenance by skilled engineers to prevent "Critical Pressure Build-up," which can lead to a catastrophic explosion. The process of burning raw Aether also produces a toxic byproduct known as "Soot-Blight," which can cause respiratory issues in dwarves and environmental damage if not properly vented. Despite these drawbacks, the Aether-engine is considered the greatest invention of the modern age, a testament to the dwarven ability to harness the chaotic power of the world.
Plot Hooks:
- The Engine's Heart: The party is hired to deliver a rare, perfectly-balanced "Turbine-Blade" to a remote airship base. The blade is being targeted by Kigum agents who want to study its design.
- The Ghost in the Machine: A Steamfort factory's primary engine has become "haunted" by a sentient wild magic anomaly, causing it to perform unpredictable and dangerous actions. The party must "exorcise" the engine.
- The Engine Competition: Lira Copperwire sponsors a competition to see who can build the most efficient miniature Aether-engine. The party must help an underdog apprentice gather the rare materials needed for their entry.
