Some believe the Whispering Eye is a cabal of ancient, mutated magi who survived the Age of Ruin by retreating into the most corrupted depths of the Mana Wastes. Others whisper that it is a singular, sentient mana-storm—a concentrated mass of chaotic energy that has gained a malevolent, telepathic awareness.
Regardless of its true form, the Whispering Eye is credited with the terrifying reality-warping abilities exhibited by the cult's highest-ranking Harbingers. It is said to communicate through dreams and sudden, violent hallucinations, "whispering" forbidden knowledge directly into the minds of those who have delved too deeply into the study of raw Aether. Victims of the Eye's influence often exhibit a characteristic "crystalline stare," their eyes clouded by shimmering, fractaling growths of mana. The Eye's primary goal appears to be the systematic deconstruction of the world's protective wards, seeking to plunge Aethervale back into the chaotic state of the Age of Ruin, which it views as the world's natural and superior form.
The Whispering Eye is particularly interested in the descendants of the Vanguard of Dawn, believing their blood contains the key to finally shattering the great magical anchors that stabilize the continents. Throughout the cities of Kigum and Steamfort, agents of the Eye work in absolute secrecy, sabotaging Aether-refineries and planting "Seed-Crystals" designed to corrupt local ley lines. The fear of the Eye is so pervasive that even the High Council of Mages treats any mention of it with extreme gravity, knowing that a single successful ritual directed by this entity could result in the instantaneous collapse of an entire city-state into a new, localized Mana Waste.
